Greenlight Laser

The Greenlight Laser is something you should be aware of if you suffer from enlarged prostate. Enlarged prostate, also called BPH or benign prostatic hypertrophy, is a condition in which the prostate gland gets bigger. It is estimated that most every man will experience an enlarged prostate during some point in their lives. While the risk of prostate enlargement increases with age men of all age ranges can experience this uncomfortable problem.

There are a variety of symptoms that may signal an enlarged prostate. Most of them are urinary because the prostate is so closely connected. The prostate gland is approximately the size of a walnut and surrounds part of the urethra. When it becomes enlarged, it compresses the urethra which is the tube through urine is passed. You can see how an enlarged prostate can cause urinary problems. Symptoms may include difficulty urinating, dribbling after urinating, frequent nighttime urination and small amounts of urine being voided at a time. These problems are not only painful in varying degrees but can be very inconvenient and have an effect on your lifestyle.

The first thing to do when these symptoms are experienced is see your doctor. He will perform the DRE or digital rectal examination to check for enlargement. Urinalysis may also be performed. If you already know you want the Greenlight treatment be sure and speak up. Doctors may try medicines or even waiting to see if the problem resolves itself before suggesting laser treatment. However for many men laser treatment is the most efficient way to go. There are various advantages of this laser treatment, especially when compared with traditional surgical intervention.

The Greenlight Laser procedure is performed by inserting a tiny fiber through the urethra which directs the laser to the problematic area. The energy from the laser gets rid of enlarged tissue and restores normal urinary flow. Normally this procedure is done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. If a patient is required to travel a long way to have the procedure done, is of advanced age or poor health, an overnight stay might be recommended. In most cases, this procedure is covered under insurance plans because it is a medical procedure that is deemed necessary by your doctor.
